Connexus : Issue 40
Why the mutuals sector? I wanted to take the next step in my career, while remaining with a socially responsible employer. The mutuals industry is exemplary in the socially responsible feld, and I knew it would be an industry I would enjoy. Just as I was looking for a career change and wanting to return to the Hunter Valley, I saw a role advertised with Companion Credit Union -- the timing couldn't have been better. Your current role? As direct marketing manager at Community CPS Australia, I manage a small team of professionals overseeing direct and digital marketing, public relations and communications and numerous projects. Some of my proudest projects to date include working with Wagga Wagga residents, the Mayor of Wagga and St Vincent de Paul Society to raise in excess of $200,000 to assist food-affected families, implementing social media platforms for my organisation and introducing various banking app developments. My work is challenging and provides an ever changing variety of work, which I fnd highly engaging. Any big successes? I have had a life-changing experience in the mutuals industry winning the 2009 Abacus Emerging Leader Award, the 2010 World Credit Union Conference Young Persons Award, and attending the World Credit Union conference in Glasgow in 2011 as a guest speaker. Through these experiences I've established a national and global network of similarly minded people all willing to share their experiences. It's very inspiring. Recently implementing social media across Community CPS Australia has been a great achievement and I am looking for ward to the challenges of taking it to the next level. I am really proud to say that, for the second time, Community CPS Australia has been announced 2012 Credit Union of the Year by Money magazine, which is a great compliment to our staff and our members and testament to our successful strategy. What do you enjoy most about work? I work with a lot of dedicated and passionate people and it makes Community CPS Australia a fantastic place to work. Our organisation has developed and launched some amazing initiatives in the community space and also in product development. What makes a good leader? In my experiences good leaders are those who are passionate about what they do, and inspire others to believe in a common goal. Good leaders can communicate strategy well so all staff can understand and work together towards the common goal. What's your approach to leadership? I like to think it's collaborative and consultative. Through my experiences in the mutuals industry I have lear nt there is a lot you need to be aware of from various angles, such as compliance or historical knowledge. By being collaborative in your approach you can learn important pieces of information from your colleagues which will help shape your outcomes. What's ahead for you? At the moment my main goal is completing my Master of Marketing, I have just 12 months left and I am really looking forward to its completion. How do you relax? Away from work I enjoy exercising and visiting the beach. My partner and I have a passion for property so we spend a lot of time looking for suitable houses and renovating them. A life-changing experience Recently implementing social media across Community CPS Australia has been a great achievement and I am looking forward to the challenges of taking it to the next level.
