T he message is clear: Australians see competition in banking as a major issue and want something done about it. Fresh research commissioned by Abacus has captured headlines around the country by revealing that two out of three Australians want an independent inquiry into the nation’s banking system. The D&M Research sur vey of 1,000 people also brought to light some other telling fndings: • Almost 80 per cent of respondents believe the major banks make excessive profts. • 65 per cent say there is not enough competition in the banking system. • 71 per cent agree that the big four have an unfair advantage in the mortgage market. www.abacus.org.au 27
